May Flowers!!! What to do this Month for your Garden
Here in the Pacific Northwest more specifically, here in the City of Grants Pass, OR May is the first month that really starts off our warm seasons! The sunshine is BACK!! This is the perfect time to check your irrigation systems. This also the time to plant heat-loving flowers and crops. It is also the time to clean up your Spring plants so they can preserve the nutrients and be ready to repeat their glory next year.
Here are some tips for the beautiful month of MAY!
1. Remove spent flowers from your Spring bloomers:
start deadheading - once the petals have gone brown snap them off. This preserves the plants energy-
2. Spring bulbs like tulips & daffodils
cut the stem of flower stalk but don't cut the leaves. The foilage needs to die back naturally- once they have dried up they will pull out easily. This gives the bulbs back the nutrients for next spring!
3. Check your watering system or irrigation system:
NOW is the time to make sure your watering system is in working order. To test, run each system manually for a least five minutes to make sure there are no leaks or no repairs needed.
4. Harvest the rhubarb:
Now is the time to harvest your cherry-red rhubarb stems to make your sweet desserts with. Rhubarb is at its most tender RIGHT NOW and since the plant often goes dormant in summer's heat, this is the perfect time to pick it! Do NOT CUT the stems- this causes rot instead pull the stalk with a twisting motion.
5. Clematis Vines:
Clematis vines have some of the most dramatic blooms of most plants in the Pacific NW. This is the time to buy them at the nursery if you want the best selection available. They are just starting to bloom!
6. Get your heat-loving plants:
This is also the time of year to set out starts of heat-loving plants like tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, melons, eggplant, corn and beans. Once the last frost date has past you should be safe to plant these frost-sensitive plants.
7. Grafted Tomatoes!
For a nice harvest try grafted tomatoes. These tomato varieties are grafted onto a more vigorous root stock. They have a better disease resistance, grow more quickly and bear a ton of fruit. These are more expensive but they are the best solution for smaller gardens they give a lot for a small plant.
8. The Beauties!
Now don't forget to pickups a few plants just for looks! Now is the time to plant frost-tender & heat-loving plants such as impatiens, petunias, million bells, coleus and more!

Cedar Front Porch Complete at 103 Columbia Crest in Paradise Vista, Grants Pass, OR
The Custom Home out at Paradise Vista in Grants Pass, OR is in the final phase. The porches & decks are the last construction projects to be finished on this Valerian Home. This porch is made of Cedar so it will brave the elements fantastically. The finish carpenter on this new custom home was able to build this beautiful deck/porch so it has more detail than an average deck. For example the railings are wider than normal. So wide in fact that a cup of coffee can sit on it without the fear of it falling. Sure looks like a nice place to hang out with your morning coffee.
The stairs is essentially the entrance to the porch and the craftsmanship is beautiful. It has a nice clean finish detail that doesn't detract from the rest of the home. The cedar is a nice choice to construct a porch or deck because first, it is a hard wood that repels bugs and can take the elements of nature and second, it is pleasing to the eye. It has a nice variance in color or tones- which has a wonderful look to it.
The 2 pictures above show the finished product. The Front Porch is complete at this New Custom Home out on lot 16 in Paradise Vista. The Valerian Homes Team is finishing up the small details and the "clean up" will begin so that the new home owners will be able to move in soon and enjoy their New Home! What an exciting time for them! We here at Valerian Homes want to Thank you for following us on this journey of the construction of a New House. We will begin 2 more new homes soon so we will keep you posted on those 2 New Construction projects too!
"YOUR DREAM, YOUR DESIGN, YOUR HOME"
We have Granite! on Lot 16 out in Paradise Vista, Grants Pass, OR
The Granite slabs, the sinks & all the fixtures have been installed out at the new custom home on lot 16 in the Paradise Vista sub-division in Grants Pass, OR. Here you can see the kitchen cabinet doors and trim have also been done with one of the appliances (refrigerator) placed. This kitchen will be complete soon. The homeowners went with a rough, unfinished look to the edge of the granite giving it a rustic look. They also went with an under-mount sink that is black -not the stainless that most people have. This is a new trend in sinks and it looks amazing!
The powder room is complete with pedistle sink and toilet. These are both in and functioning. The homeowners have gone with bronze fixtures on all plumbing and on the doors.
Here is the 2nd Bedroom's Bathroom granite and sink with fixture. The Valerian Team has not hooked up the plumbing yet nor has a toilet been installed at present- but both will be taken care of in a matter of days.
Here is the Guest Bathroom - it appears that the homeowners have decided to use the same granite throughout the house- simplicity is best when you are picking finishes. It gives the home a cohesive look.
Here is the Master Bath- looks like the homeowners went with one sink and opted for more counter space. The mirrors and the light fixtures will be installed within a few days and that will finish off the Master suite!
The homeowners went with a tile counter/back-splash here in the mud-room. This room as we all knows gets the most abuse in the home so a tile surface is a smart choice. This New Custom home will be complete soon and the homeowners will be moving in soon. The goal date is first week of May 2012!!!
Finishing Details to New Home on Lot 16-Paradise Vista, Grants Pass, OR
Here are some of the finishing touches to the almost completed custom home on Lot 16 at Paradise Vista in the City of Grants Pass, OR!!!!
The homeowners are members of the local Dog club & they show their extended family members at various Dog shows.
They wanted a station set up to pamper their pups! Here are a few pictures of the Dog Washing Station/Dog Tub that the Valerian Team built for them & they used some of the same tile from the home for the backsplash! Pretty nice!
The plastic protective sheets have been removed from the windows and doors due to the interior painting has been completed! Look at the awesome views that are exposed! This gives you a taste of what views are available out in the Paradise Vista Sub-division. Now that Spring is here....the Mountains come alive with new growth and gorgeous color!
The Front Door has been stained & the Front porch has been prepped for the decking to begin. The Valerian Team has also started to paint the exterior of the Custom Home - you can see that the homeowners have chosen a soft yellow/maze color. This will make the home POP in all the greenery that surrounds the house.
Here are some more photos of the exterior paint- These show the home from the back & you can see the back patio will be a favorite hang out for the homeowners. Soon they will be able to enjoy the views and start having wonderful memories BBQing and just enjoying the Southern Oregon Seasons! The Valerian Team's goal for the homeowners is to be able to MOVE-IN by the beginning of May 2012! Looks like that goal is going to be met!
Advantages to an Open Kitchen – in New Home Construction
It hasn't been long when Kitchens were designated to a corner of the house cut off from the rest of the home and were considered an unimportant room. However, with different lifestyle trends currently, the concept of an open kitchen is hugely popular today and some would argue that most homes will not sell if they do not have an open concept.
Here are the ADVANTAGES to an open Kitchen:
MORE SPACE- when the walls of the kitchen breakdown, the area opens up to other rooms/spaces of the house. It makes the kitchen seem bigger and gives the entire area a spacious appearance.
FUNCTIONAL KITCHEN - an open kitchen offers the opportunity to be a 2 places at a single time. For example: Keeping an eye on your kid's activities while cooking.
DECORATION - an open kitchen gives you a platform to display your expensive appliances as decoration pieces or your fine glassware, crockery, etc.
SOCIAL INTERACTION - you get a chance to interact and converse with your family or guests while you prepare the meals. In addition, the kitchen seems to be the main gathering place for casual get-togethers anyways. The open kitchen allows everyone to be included.
and finally.....
SERVE HOT - you can actually serve food fresh & hot as the cooking counter and dining table are closely located and the kitchen is right there for anything that might be needed at a the last minute.
This open kitchen concept has been one of the most frequent requests with many of the New Valerian Homes customers - the dining room is either open to the kitchen or has been incorporated into the kitchen design. "Formal Dining Room" seems to be the verbiage of the past & most people are wanting a more casual feel in their new home.
Cabinets are in!!! Lot 16 at Paradise Vista in Grants Pass
The Cabinets have been installed at the New Custom Home at 103 Columbia Crest out at the Paradise Vista sub-division in Grants Pass, OR. This Construction project is in the final stages for the Valerian Homes Team. This Custom Home is due to be complete by May 1st, 2012! Then the homeowners will be moving in and enjoying their new Home!!!
Here is the Kitchen Cabinets - made with Alder the home owners have chosen a nice medium stain color. It appears that they really like the earthy colors with the choice of tile and flooring.
Another view of kitchen - soon the counter-tops and back splash will be installed - the homeowners have chosen granite for counter-tops! It will be awesome to see it when it is all complete! We will keep you posted on progress.
The homeowners wanted a cabinet in the Breakfast Nook area- it will serve as extra storage and be useful as a buffet table if needed. The counter-top will be the same granite as the Kitchen.
Here is the cabinetry in the Laundry/Mud Room. The homeowners have chosen a tile counter-top here.
The Guest Bath has a linen closet attached for extra storage.
Here is the 2nd Bedroom Bath Cabinetry. This has a lot of counter space for guests.
Master Bath will have dual sinks and it too also has a linen storage cabinet. All the bathrooms will have granite slabs for the countertops with under- mount sinks. It is so hard to believe that this Custom home will be finished in little less than a months time! The Valerian Team has worked closely with the homeowners to bring their dream home alive - it all started more than a year ago and now it is in its final phase!
Southern Oregon has an Attractive Real Estate Market!!!
Here in Southern Oregon in cities like Grants Pass, Medford, Jacksonville and Ashland, plenty of residents are convinced that an attractive California real estate market spurs population growth in these areas. If this is the case, Southern Oregon can expect a rush of people looking to relocate here in the near future.
According to a real estate specialist from Prudential Sherm Heater Inc., Realtors in Grants Pass, "Many people are coming here not only from California, but also Arizona, Idaho and Washington." She also added, that there has been a lot of turnover. People moving here into this area are looking or seeking a slower pace and they want to be closer to the outdoor recreational opportunities that Southern Oregon has to offer. And don't forget the climate! Most people coming from California are looking for weather- Southern Oregon enjoys all four seasons!
Some of the migration here to Southern Oregon is driven by smaller employers who move their entire businesses north. They are looking for a better quality of life. Another factor more people are attracted to this area is that they feel they can get more "bang for their buck" when it comes to property and homes.
History proves that when the real estate market is doing well in the Bay area (San Francisco) things pick up for the Southern Oregon market. And at present the market in San Francisco is the highest it's ever been. That drives up the prices and in turn, makes it more attractive for people to sell and relocate to Southern Oregon.
103 Columbia Crest, Grants Pass Custom home has Storage Storage Storage!!!
This Custom Home is coming along out at our Paradise Vista sub-division in the City of Grants Pass, OR. The Valerian Team have been putting all the finishing touches on this new beautiful house - this week they were working on the closet built-ins/storage....take a look!
Master Closet includes a built-in dresser.....
a built-in bench....
more shelves!!!! This is a very well organized Master closet! The built-ins have been caulked and will be painted soon.
Here is the storage for the Hall Coat Closet.
Guest Bedroom closet built-ins...
2nd Bedroom closet built-ins....one of 2 closets in this room
2nd closet in the 2nd Bedroom- these also have been caulked and will be painted too.
Last but certainly not least....the Kitchen Pantry! This is a huge walk-in pantry that will store food as well as kitchen appliances that the home owner may not want on the counters. This is one of the EXTRA perks when you build a custom home with Valerian Homes. You can design all spaces (even the small ones) however you want and it is not limited on the Paradise Vista Homes. We offer this same perks on the Castle Heights & Scenic Bayou homes too. This Custom Home on 103 Columbia Crest is in the finishing stages....the last major room to be done is the Kitchen! Keep checking back with us we will keep updating the blog with pictures- It will be fun to see what kind of finishes the homeowners have chosen.
